Rams win first state tourney game 5-0 over Crestwood

Next game is Thursday at 1 pm

The Greene County Rams and coach Tom Kennedy are on the winners’ side of the Class 3A state softball tournament after a 5-0 win over the Crestwood (Cresco) Cadets at Harlan Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge Monday evening.

The Rams’ runs all came in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Sydney Koch, who leads the Rams in batting averages at .441, started the inning with a full count single to centerfield.

Senior Bailey Godwin struck out, but junior Carleigh Paup hit a single toward first base, putting runners at first and second. Senior Kayla Mobley hit a single past the second baseman and the bases were loaded with one out. Senior Emily Christensen hit a single that allowed Koch and Paup to score and advanced Mobley to second. Senior Hannah Onken hit into the second out. Senior Tressa Rasmussen hit a double that scored Mobley and Christensen for a 4-0 lead. Rasmussen came home on an Emma Saddoris single to centerfield. Crestwood pitcher Lauren Reicks got her third out on a rolling hit to third base by Ram pitcher Marissa Promes, and the inning ended with the Rams up 5-0.

The Rams got a total of 10 hits, six of them in the third inning. Senior Bailey Godwin hit a single in the fourth inning, senior Hannah Onken hit a double in the fifth inning, and Promes and Paup both hit singles in the sixth inning.

Christensen had two runs batted in, Rasmussen had two and Saddoris had one. The Cadets were tagged for one error.

Promes got her 30th pitching win of the season. She struck out six batters, walked no batters and hit none with pitches. The Cadets got only two hits for the game – a single by the second batter in the order in the first inning, and then a bunt single at the top of the fifth inning. The Rams committed no errors.

The Rams are 31-6 on the season. They’ll finish the season in no worse than fourth place in Class 3A. Their next game is Thursday at 1 pm against the Benton Community Bobcats (41-3). If the Rams win against the Bobcats they’ll play for the championship Friday at 12:15 pm. If they lose to the Bobcats they’ll play Friday at 11:30 am for third or fourth place.
